Abrasive Wheel Awareness

All employers and persons using abrasive wheel must ensure the equipment is suitable for the job, is clearly marked with the maximum permissible speed, is correctly mounted and operators are trained, competent and wearing the correct PPE.

Under the current legislation an employer must not allow any person to operate the wheel unless they are trained and competent to mount the wheel.

This is the online part of a blended training program.

Students must complete a practical session in order to get certified.

Who should do this course?

Any person who operates:

  • A wheel, cylinder, disc or cone which, whether or not any other material is comprised in it, consists of abrasive particles held together by bonds.
  • A mounted wheel or point and a wheel or disc having (in either case) separate segments of abrasive material
  • A wheel or disc made (in either case) of metal, wood, cloth, felt, rubber or paper and having any surface consisting wholly or partly of abrasive material
  • A wheel, disc or saw to which a rim or segments consisting of diamond abrasive particles are attached, which is, or is intended to be, power-driven and is for use in any grind

What will you learn on this course?

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the safe work procedures when operating the wheel
  • Describe the correct selection of wheel to suit particular jobs
  • Recognise the specifications marked on the wheel
  • Demonstrate the knowledge of correct procedures for mounting the wheel.

How does it work?

At the end of each module, you will take part in an assessment process which consists of 20 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 80%.

The answers for this assessment are marked automatically so you will know instantly if you have passed or not. If you don’t pass, then don’t worry, as you can take the course as many times as possible with no extra charge.

Active Monitoring

Employers should actively monitor safety performance of staff and take corrective actions where required.
